Oracle Outreach
Written in the hard-boiled style of Raymond Chandler and originally aired January 28, 1950 on the CBS Radio Network, “The Hairpin Turn” follows Marlowe on a case trailing the spoiled niece of the wealthy Enoch Vanneman. When this ordinary bodyguard assignment turns to homicide, Marlowe suddenly finds himself accused of murder and tempted into corruption by the greedy schemes of a crooked fellow detective. The plot unfolds into a race against time for Marlowe to solve the case.
“The Hairpin Turn” is Oracle’s second adapted radio play and its first installment from the Philip Marlowe series. Played in the style of 1940’s film noir, Oracle brings this classic radio whodunit to startling life. Using the original broadcast recording in its entirety, our actors combine live action, pantomime and shadow puppetry to inspire our audience’s imaginations much the same way that the original radio broadcast did for its listeners. The result is an enjoyable experience that is both exciting and nostalgic.
The performance of “The Hairpin Turn” lasts 27 minutes. Immediately following the performance, our cast is available for about an hour to socialize with members of our audience and to discuss the play.
background
Old Time Radio | Before it was replaced by the television set, the primary source of entertainment in the typical American household was – for the first half of the 20th century – the radio set. During the golden years of radio, families would gather around their sets to listen to the evening programs, much of which consisted of serial stories such as “The Shadow” and “The Green Hornet”. Popular among these serials was “The Adventures of Philip Marlowe”, which aired from 1947 to 1951 with over 75 episodes produced.
